I recently discovered that I had never done the Mount Ngungun Climb in the 20 plus years I have lived in the Glass House Mountains area.
I always meant to do it, but it was always just there, and I could do it any time I wanted, you know how it is when you live close to something and don't bother doing it just because it is so close and available.
Well today I can say that I have now climbed Mount Ngungun and it is my new favourite climb in the Glass House Mountains.

The description below is a bit outdated as the track has now been upgraded. I wanted to include it so you could compare the old and new tracks.
The track starts with a gentle bush walk for 5 minutes or so with a few sets of steps and then you reach the steep scrambling path up a rock filled gully.
After this steep section you reach a flat area to soak in the views and a little rest if needed before the final, not quite as steep ascent to the top ridge.
When you reach the ridge you turn left and the summit is another couple of minutes walk away.
If you have kids with you this is the place to keep them well supervised as the walk goes very close to the cliff.
Very nice views from the top of most of the mountains.
Mount Beerwah and Mount Coonowrin almost perfectly lined up makes a good photo as you can see above.
I have heard it said that if you are training for the Kokada Track, the Mount Ngungun Climb is a very good training ground. Looks like I might need to loose a few kg's and climb this one a few more times before I'm ready.

Mount Ngungun Or Ngun Ngun ?????
Either is an accepted way of saying it but at a guess Mount Ngun Ngun sounds more authentic.
Mount Ngun Ngun Upgrade
The walking track to the summit of Mount Ngungun will be upgraded over the next 8 months. Works are scheduled to commence on the 26 November 2012, with periodic closures required for safety purposes.
Every effort will be made to keep the track open during the works, however, for safety during high risk construction, closures will be required from 7.30am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday from 26 November to 14 December 2012.
Works are expected to be complete by June 2013, weather dependent.
For more information please contact QPWS Maleny office - 07 5494 3983 during office hours.
Check out this great video from Kara Murphy of the new track.
I can hardly wait to check it out for myself.
